The three original online game modes-- deathmatch, bomb your opponent's base, and hostage rescue--are joined by two new ones that have you escorting innocents and breaching a fortified stronghold. Zipper's also pulling out the big guns, literally: Rocket-propelled grenades and machinegun turrets should spice things up nicely.

On the voice-communication front, SOCOM 2 will once again support the headset controller even in the lobbies while you wait for a game , but it won't come packed-in; you can use the set from the first game or buy one separately.

Now, if they can just find a way to stop those damn cheaters And they'd be right. Almost everything about this squad-based shooter looks and sounds and feels and plays like the original. But I'd like to remind those people of one thing: So what?

Even when you play alone, you're never alone; your three A. Order them to open doors, scout ahead, sneak to a position, toss grenades Well, almost always they are definitely improved over the first game.

Plus, they're crack shots and make for great sorry guys! You'll experience just about every cool special-forces-movie fantasy--question informants, rescue hostages, infiltrate jungle coke labs, fight pitched battles in the downtown streets of the Middle East, etc. Every mission is full of nooks, crannies, and greatly improved plants and shrubbery, all of which add to the overall realism and stealth gameplay.

It's a blast tracking terrorists through the tall grass by watching for swaying stalks, or appearing out of a dense jungle to slit their throats.

The new, bigger maps do a fantastic job of combining in- and outdoor environments and the game's overall focus on teamwork. Tons of crisscrossing paths, hiding spots, and ambush points add layers of strategy to the action.

Toss in two great new play modes and a host of tweaks that read like a fan's wish list see sidebar on the next page and you end up with a sequel that, while not very different than the first ground-breaking game, demands to be played just as urgently. Mark is the most grizzled SOCOMvet in our platoon, so of course he's going to suffer a few combat-stress-induced flashbacks during this follow-up tour of duty.

Although enemies are brainier this time--as are your lethally cunning SEAL squad mates--they still make the occasional braindead move. Single-player missions again feel a little canned, forcing you to memorize enemy trou-blespots.

And spastic players will still accidentally trip the reload button in the heat of a firefight. If only the game let players disable those touchy analog-stick buttons for good.

But SOCOM II makes up for these little snafus with stellar tweaks, from the more elaborate single-player missions to the spiffier visuals and presentation. And, once again, the online game is killer. The new modes and maps--with their fields of foliage, lead-spraying turrets, and strategic choke points--are a blast. Newbies will embrace the new deathmatch respawning option, which is a great way to practice and try out different weapons for the more serious one-hit-and-you're-out games.

My only concern: The terrorist-only anti-personnel mines and auto-shotgun might tip online battles in the bad guys' favor, so be careful out there, SEAL players. Personally, I think Mark's been playing a little too much of that newfangled Xbox thing. These cookies ensure basic functionalities and security features of the website, anonymously.

And, thanks to the heavy amount of cheater and code breaker from the first two games, you now can only register to play online with a credit card, they will not charge you, but it should cut down on those who seek to disrupt others' play.

The single player game is fairly straight up, with you commanding your four man SEAL team at various hot zones around the world. The missions are good and diverse with secondary objectives and unique challenges. Enemy terrorists don't plan out attacks very well and have somewhat of a harder time actually killing you. And you own team's A. Too often members of your own team will wander into gunfire and get themselves killed where you know darn well that a heavily trained anti-terrorist unit would take cover.

The multiplayer maps are now very large and with the introduction of vehicles can be the only good way to get from one end to the other, and in some cases it is a requirement to drive these vehicles.

There of course is a ton of rooms out there and players can form up and make clans for online war. It should also be said that instead of 8 on 8, the multiplayer rooms can now host 32 total players, 16 on each side. Impressive, but be sure you are in a good room for your connection because I was experiencing some heavy lag when there was around 20 of us playing the other night.

But you play these games because the online experience is that good. It's the best online game Sony has going in its library and the best competition against Xbox live. Still, this is one heck of a way to game online, pick it up. Browse games Game Portals. Socom 3: US Navy Seals. Install Game.
